friday fun stuff

Normally I do not believe in this stuff, but I gotta be honest it's so spot on. Now that I'm older and a tad bit wiser (we hope) I'm reading it more thoroughly.About 10 years ago I got this book: The Secret Language of Birthdays. Sure I got it for the surprise, the wow factor, the 'let's see what celebrities have my birthday' (Jim Henson and F. Scott Fitzgerald). Neat right? The book breaks

Avant garde design

Just came across a music blog specialising in avant garde and experimental music.

One group of records on the site really caught my eye.

They're from the Deutsche Grammophon label.

Some beautifully simple graphic design.

Particularly good reference I think for people who design for the web as they show how you can make virtually endless variants on a theme.

Love the way the designers carried the treatment across to the back cover too.

If you click and enlarge the pics you'll also see some very well crafted type.

Hard to believe these covers are almost as old as I am!

Item of the Month, November 2011: Certificate of attendance at William Hunter's lectures

One of the pivotal figures in eighteenth century medicine, William Hunter (born on May 23rd 1718 at Long Calderwood, Kilbride, Scotland) was an eminent doctor, surgeon, obstetrician and teacher of anatomy. Educated in Glasgow and Edinburgh, he arrived in London in 1741 and by 1746 had begun to give lectures on anatomy and dissection in Covent Garden. By 1756, Hunter’s esteem had risen to the extent that he became a licentiate of the Royal College of Physicians.

Hunter regularly published essays and other works and became one of the outstanding physicians of the day, being appointed as physician extraordinary to Queen Charlotte in 1762. He had a school of anatomy built in 1770 in Great Windmill Street, London with an amphitheatre and what became an internationally famous collection. He died in March 1783 of a stroke following a long battle with that most recognisable of 18th Century diseases, gout. Whilst key to understanding the growth of the ‘man-midwife’ during this period, William Hunter’s career arguably now stands in the shadows of his younger brother, John.

The Wellcome Library acquired this certificate in May 2011. It dates from the Spring of 1755 when Hunter was still lecturing in Covent Garden and confirms that one Richard Colmer (surgeon) had satisfactorily completed anatomy and surgery courses under Hunter’s tutelage. The certificate, signed by Hunter, is headed by an engraved portrait of a bust of William Harvey, M.D., classical pillars to either side.

William Harvey was in born in Folkestone, Kent in 1578, educated at Canterbury, Cambridge University and Padua before joining the College of Physicians in 1604 and working at St. Bartholomew’s Hospital, being appointed as physician extraordinary to James I in 1618 then physician in ordinary to King Charles in 1631. As many readers of this blog will no doubt be aware, his 1628 publication, Exercitatio anatomica de motu cordis et sanguinis in animalibus presented his discovery of the workings of the heart and the circulation of the blood.

As suggested by the use of his image on this certificate, Hunter was a clear admirer of Harvey. We know that Hunter purchased and read keenly a number of works from Harvey's own Library. Hunter also authored a manuscript – now held in the collections of University of Glasgow – which illustrates this interest: Historical Anecdotes of Dr. William Harvey by Wm. Hunter, collected from family papers, etc., communicated to me by Councillor Eliab Harvey of Lincoln's Inn-fields, from the College book, from his own writings, from writers, from the Records in St. Bartholomew's etc [1].

This certificate now joins the other material held by the Wellcome Library on William Hunter, which includes his classic work of obstetrics, The Anatomy of the Human Gravid Uterus Exhibited in Figures to other certificates of attendance and student notes made at his lectures. Indeed, our MS.2965 – which consists of notes made by William Brougham Monkhouse (later surgeon to H.M.S. Endeavour, 1768-1770 on Captain Cook's First Voyage) - dates from the same period as Colmer’s certificate of attendance at Covent Garden.

Whilst establishing a connection between Colmer and Monkhouse is outwith the purposes of this blog, let’s instead consider the connections between Hunter and Harvey and one man of medicine paying homage to another.

Who Is That T-Mobile Spokeswoman? Do U Know?

Well, kind of. Many admirers didn't exactly know her name, so they searched on a variety of terms to help identify the pink-and-white-clad spokesperson.
Carly FoulkesSitting around watching TV this Thanksgiving weekend, many viewers must have caught commercials for T-Mobile. Web interest in the cell phone carrier's brunette spokesperson Carly Foulkes is through the roof.
Online lookups for "t-mobile spokesperson," "t-mobile commercial woman, "t-mobile girl," and "t-mobile girl name" all posted gains. Those who already knew the pitchwoman's name had sent lookups on "Carly Foulkes" up 34%.

Watch Foulkes' T-Mobile spot:
Foulkes, 23, is no doubt best known for her cell phone commercials. But from the looks of her résumé, she's branching out into movies and TV. She has a role in "Powers," a TV pilot based on the acclaimed comic book series. The project co-stars Lucy Punch, Vinnie Jones, and Jason Patric. Foulkes will play a superhero known as Retro Girl. Comic creator Brian Michael Bendis describes the character as "the Princess Di of the 'Powers' world."
Foulkes isn't the only commercial star to draw interest in the search box. Also perennially popular: Flo from the Progressive Insurance ads. The excitable insurance saleswoman played by Stephanie Courtney inspires plenty of searches week after week. Web lookups for "flo progressive" and "who is progressive flo actress" are popular time and again, a sign that Progressive has itself a successful ad campaign.
But Courtney isn't just about insurance. She's had appearances in acclaimed shows "House" and "The Comeback," and a five-episode stint in "Mad Men." See if you can spot her in this clip from the first season.
Foulkes and Courtney are the most popular commercial stars, but a third actress is coming on strong in the search box. Karme Boixadera appears in the commercials for Amazon's Kindle Fire. She's starred in a "True Blood" spoof commercial for Axe deodorant.
Of course not every star of commercials goes on to a Hollywood career. But it has happened. Rebecca Gayheart was, for years, best known as the "Noxzema girl." And Ali Larter of "Heroes" used to pitch perfume for (don't laugh) Designer Imposters.

Kate Hudson Sizzles in Cut-Out Dress Four Months After Giving Births

Kate Hudson Sizzles in Cut-Out Dress Four Months After Giving BirthStella McCartney‘s figure-flaunting silhouette dresses from her spring 2012 collection have been catching the eyes of many stylish celebs including Kate Winslet and Lala Vazquez Anthony.

The latest star to step out in one of McCartney’s sexy numbers is Kate Hudson, who wore a black one-shoulder design to the 2011 British Fashion Awards in London Monday. The actress, who just gave birth to her second son, Bingham, in July, showed off her incredible post-baby bod through the dress’ see-through mesh panel along her torso.
“Stella dressed me for my first red carpet event in 2001 for the Academy Awards,” Hudson, 32, said about the first time she donned one of the designer’s creations. “It was my first and only nomination. I was 21 years old and to have Stella McCartney dressing me, well, I felt like the hippest, coolest girl in the world. Up until the last minute Stella was still sewing the hem. I woke up the next morning, turned on the television to find out I was on every Worst Dressed list. So I called Stella and we just laughed our arses off and she said to me, ‘Look babe, it was the hem wasn’t it?’” (Read more at redcarpet-fashionawards.com)
Hudson paired her ensemble with sculpted cheeks, radiant skin and loaded lashes. She styled her hair into an undone topknot.

Learning to love a good suit

Over the last couple of days I've had to estimate and cost up elements of a large and very exciting project I am working on.

Problem is I'm not used to doing it.

Sure I have a rough idea how long I think a job will take.

But actually typing it up and putting it in an official document?

No way!

Yes folks I'll admit it - I have taken suits for granted.

I really have.

But not anymore.

Promise.

Tazo Tuesday

This is the look that I'm giving Daddy because he woke me up from my nap.  I mean, we have a whole routine every morning.  He drinks coffee and I snooze on his lap.  I do not care that he wants another cup of coffee.  I think that he should wait to get one until I wake up in a couple of hours.

In other news, Mama couldn't sleep last night and was reading stuff online and found out that KIMO CAME HOME! KIMO'S HOME! KIMO'S HOME! KIMO'S HOME!  Isn't that the best news?

Shah Rukh Khan Reveals His Dates Diary

hah Rukh Khan talks about the films he is doing next, the ones he has refused, and why, and  what he plans to do in 2012.  A Koimoi.com Exclusive.

Now that his Ra.One is released and Don 2 is due for release, Shah Rukh Khan is all set to start his new slate of films. The first movie he will face the cameras for will be Yash Chopra's untitled film, co-starring Katrina Kaif and Anushka Sharma. Although the original plan was to have the cameras rolling for it in the first week of December, Shah Rukh requested the maverick filmmaker to postpone its launching by a month.

The superstar, who will go with family to Dubai on 29th December, will return to India on 4th January in the new year. Says Shah Rukh Khan, "I will start shooting for Yashji's film on 5th (January)." Before that, Katrina and Anushka will do a workshop with the actor.

SRK: There is a project with Anurag Basu and Anurag Kashyap…

There is a project each with Anurag Basu and Anurag Kashyap on the anvil. Anurag Basu's script for the Shah Rukh starrer was ready quite some time back but the superstar asked him to complete Barfee first as he knew, he would be busy with Ra.One. As for the Kashyap film, Shah Rukh smiles, "He says, he has got a full-on commercial film up his sleeve this time, which he wants to make with me." If Anurag Kashyap is keen to open his account with Shah Rukh Khan, so is younger brother, Abhinav Kashyap. "Abhinav had met me soon after Dabangg was released but I don't know what is happening thereafter," explains Shah Rukh, adding, "He wanted to make a film with me but he also has the subject of a rom-com ready for a younger actor."

SRK: I have decided not to do Vishal Bhardwaj's 2 States

What about Vishal Bhardwaj's film based on Chetan Bhagat's novel, 2 States? "I have decided not to do that film," admits the actor. "Too many people were saying too many things about the film and so, I lost interest in the project. I told Vishal, I wouldn't want to work in this film. But I'll definitely do a film with him. He is very talented, hardworking and very sincere." Shah Rukh then reveals what he jocularly told Vishal: "I told him, we'll not make a dark film, we will shoot with a lot of lights. In fact, when Adi (Aditya Chopra), Vishal and I met together, Adi told him to keep the ending of his proposed film starring me, completely commercial. Why, I jokingly asked him to shoot his climax first, and then the rest of the film." The actor is all praise for Vishal's musical genius too. Rohit Shetty's Chennai Express finds a definite place in Shah Rukh's dates diary. "Rohit has completed writing the first half of Chennai Express, and it is damn good," reveals Khan.

SRK: I'm not playing any role in Karan Johar's Student Of The Year

Denying rumours that he is acting in Karan Johar's Student Of The Year, Shah Rukh reveals, "No I'm not playing any role in the film. My name will adorn its credit titles as one of the producers because Karan feels, I must be a joint producer in every film he makes." So what is Shah Rukh Khan's plan of action before he leaves for Dubai in December-end? In the next 33 days, he would, of course, be promoting Don 2. He also intends devoting time to all the aforementioned filmmakers he is in conversation with for their films. "I need to understand which films I would be starting and when," says Shah Rukh. "I intend sitting in my new office for two-three days and meeting Anurag Basu, Anurag Kashyap, Vishal Bhardwaj, etc."

There is one more film Shah Rukh Khan is kicked about and that is his friend, Sanjay Ray Chaudhuri's (cofounder of the Network 18 group with Raghav Bahl) debut film. "Sanjay and I are friends since college days," explains the actor. All of this means that Shah Rukh will be busier than the proverbial bee once the New Year sets in.

보이지 않는 사랑
Invisible Love

사랑해선 안 될게 너무 많아
There are too many things I must not love
그래서 더욱 슬퍼지는 것같아
Perhaps that is why it is even sadder
그중에서 가장 슬픈 건
The saddest among all is
날 사랑하지 않는 그대
you who do not love me
내 곁에 있어달라는 말 하지 않았지
I never said be by my side
하지만 떠날 필요 없잖아
But you did not need to leave
보이지 않게 사랑할 거야
I will love you invisibly
너무 슬퍼 눈물 보이지만
Though I may show tears because of overwhelming sorrow

어제는 사랑을 오늘은 이별을
Yesterday, love; today, parting
미소짓는 얼굴로 울고 있었지
Crying with a smiling face
하지만 나 이렇게 슬프게 우는 건
But I cry so sadly like this
내일이면 찾아올 그리움 때문일꺼야
Because of the longing that will come tomorrow

Translation note:  It's not like the lyrics in Korean was the most sophisticated one in the world, but in English they sound terribly childish. Suggestions are welcome, as always.

In 15 words or less:  The king of ballad.

Maybe he should be ranked higher because...  His dominance over his genre was nearly unparalleled, particularly back in the 1990s when ballad was the mainstream music.

Maybe he should be ranked lower because...   Did he have any musical imprint in Korean pop music history?

Why is this artist important?
It is difficult to overstate how huge "ballad" was back in Korean of 1990s. At this point in time, many people believe that air-headed, bubble-gum "k-pop", represented Girls' Generation, Super Junior and the like, constitutes the entirety of Korean pop music. That notion is clearly a mistake, but it is an understandable mistake given that the presence of "k-pop" (in the smaller sense of the word) is so dominant over the airwaves. If the same people were exposed to Korean pop music in the 1990s, they would have thought that the morose and saccharine "ballads" were the only Korean pop music available.

Shin was the eye of the storm of the era. His public presence was rivaled by only a select few on this list. The 17 million copies of his album sold speak for themselves. Although Shin never truly attempted anything artistically daring, he deserves a spot here as a true exemplar of K-pop's zeitgeist.

Interesting trivia:  Shin holds a second degree black belt in kung fu.
